How To Gain Followers on Social Networks

Learning how to gain followers on any social network is a big part of growing our niche blog. This leads to reaching out and letting people know what is new on our website.

Without people following us on Facebook, Twitter, Google+,  or any other network, it seems pointless to post. However, this is not true and there is more value in an email list.

But we still can benefit from having a good size social following. The hard part is getting those followers that want to see our answers, site updates, and tips.

Gain Followers on Twitter

The best way to gain a following on Twitter is by following other accounts that are relevant to our niche. If we have a site about the newest technology we would want to follow accounts like ‘Google’, ‘TechCrunch’, and ‘Apple’.

Look at the people who are following these big name accounts and follow them.

TIP: Before you follow anyone that is following a specific account make sure to ‘tweet’ at that big name account. This will help raise the number of people who follow you back.

Gain Followers on Facebook

facebook logoSince we are most likely using a Facebook page and not our personal accounts, the best way to gain followers on Facebook is to use targeted ads.

Yes, this does cost money so in the mean time make sure the page looks good and has a lot of content for potential visitors.

Create an ad that is targeted towards the people who are interested in our niche. Make sure we set the goal of the campaign to gaining more ‘likes’ on our Facebook page.

TIP: The best way to convert clicks on our ad into page ‘likes’ is with a landing page. Check out my blog post on Wealthy Affiliate to see how well this worked for me.

~See how effective the landing page was for my campaign~

Gain Followers on Tumblr

This is a very visual network. Posting videos and pictures will yield the best results in gaining a following.

By searching relevant topics within our niche on this site, we will be shown accounts that have similar interests as our site. Follow these people to start gaining a social presence.

TIP: Don’t feel bad about unfollowing a user. Our account reputation is much more important than losing a one follower on the network.

Gain Followers on Google+

Gain Followers on google plusThe best way to gain followers on Google+ is to add people and accounts to our circles, as long as they are relevant to the topic of the niche site.

Another great way is by joining the communities within Google+. These are similar to forums, and anyone that is apart of the community is able to comment and add posts.

Get to know the people there, help them, and answer their questions. This will give you more authority and trust within the community.

TIP: Using a page is best for promoting our website, this allows us to keep our private stuff private and all our internet marketing stuff in one place on Google+. But don’t hesitate to share the posts from that page with your personal circles.

General Guideline to Gain Followers

Be genuine. Show the person you care about helping them solve the problem they are having within your nice. An approach I found to work well is as follows. First I search a hashtag or word that relates to my niche.

After this I skim around to find a person who could use some help. I then reply to that person telling them that I get where they are coming from and have a solution to their problem. But! Don’t give them a link right away.

We don’t want to come off as spammy or fishing for links, because we are not. We are looking to gain a true following. If the user responds that yes they do want help. Then and only then will I send them a link to my site with the information that will help them.

No only does this show another person the value in their site but also builds trust. All the tools in the world can not make up for a loyal follower that comes from us providing help to those who need it.

Is Affiliate Marketing Worth Your Valuable Time

Affiliate Marketing is one of the best ways to help supplement your ad revenue from your blog. This is done by signing up for affiliate programs of various companies and referring people to those sites or products. Once the person buys the product, you make a commission.

A big key here is to not just grab a link and start blasting it out to your email list and social media following. No one will click it cause no one likes being sold to. The best approach is to find a product, service, or program that you believe will help your readers.

Once you find it, buy it yourself! Use the program and get to know it. This will help you decide if the product is worth the effort of promoting it to your readers. Whether or not the product is good, make sure to write a review of the product.

If it’s bad, warn your readers so they don’t waste their money. This will also help you build trust. If it’s good or great, write a review and explain why you loved the product. Make sure you link your affiliate link to the post appropriately. When people trust you and your authority they will click the links to buy a program or service you find helpful.

Finding Affiliate Marketing Programs

Almost every site that sells a product will have an affiliate program. Most of the time the link will be at the bottom of the webpage, so snoop around a little bit. For example, I am an affiliate of Wealthy Affiliate, the Squatty Potty, the ibotta app, and Amazon (yes, they have a program!).

Clickbank LogoThere are sites completely devoted to affiliate programs. These include Commission Junction and Clickbank. Amazon is a great site to be an affiliate marketer with since there are a ton of products they sell. They do have a lower commission rate than most other companies though, so keep that in mind. Since the number of products are high and people trust them it is worth signing up. Especially once the number of people to your site increases, every penny adds up.

Using the Affiliate Marketing Programs

Affiliate marketing is pretty straight forward and using the programs is just as easy. What you are looking for is your ‘affiliate link’. This is a special link that has our affiliate name or number attached to it, letting the site know that we referred the person.

Copy the special link and add it to the page that is relevant to the product. I don’t recommend having a page devoted to your affiliate links. I know some bloggers who do this and it is probably useful with a huge following. But when just starting out or at the mid-rage traffic level you will not see many gains from that method.

If you know a little about HTML make sure you add rel=”nofollow” to the link’s code. This will tell Google, Yahoo, and Bing not to follow that link. This is useful because there is no need to them to leave your site in order to see the company landing page. Chances are that company is already fairly well known and does not need your ‘link juice’ anyway.

Using Pretty Link with Affiliate Marketing Links

Pretty Link Create New Link

If you don’t know HTML don’t worry there is an easy way to add the no follow code. This is when the ‘Pretty Link’ plugin comes in handy.

Simply copy the special link, go to your WordPress dashboard and click ‘Pretty Link”.

Then find where it says ‘add new link‘ and paste your special affiliate link into the box that says ‘target URL‘.

Choose a name for the new link that will be created, and add a title.

Before you click ‘create‘ make sure you check the box that says “no follow this link” and the plugin will automatically add the rel=”nofollow” to the code.

Not only does this plugin allow easy integration of the no follow code but it also takes those ugly affiliate links and makes them much easier to share around. You can also use this plugin to track how many clicks a link gets. Which is useful when running tests to see what people are clicking when they come to your site.

Please share any success with affiliate marketing. It’s always good to hear these stories to keep everyone motivated!

Twitter : The Short Text Internet Soapbox

Twitter is unlike Facebook and Google+ because of how it has been set up.

This social network is known as a microblog.

Which means that the users of this network are limited in the number of characters they may use.

In a status update on Google+ and Facebook, the users are able to type a post with as many characters as they want.

There is no limit on what they can say.

The Shortness of Twitter

On Twitter, the users are only able to use 140 characters to say what they want to get across.

Characters are not only letters, but spaces, numbers, and symbols. This makes the people on Twitter think about what they want to say and how to convey the message in a short amount of space.

Twitter also allows us to promote our posts as a business to gain more eyes on our post. Hopefully attracting new followers to our profile, in order to see more of what we have to offer.

Twitter PostsWith Twitter being the third largest social network it is important that we use the site to our full advantage.

Not every new page is going to have the option of promoting posts and advertising on the network right away.

Over time, they will email you about setting up a promoted post.

We are also able to add links, videos, and photos to our posts on twitter. This is when shortening the URL comes in handy.

Photos that are uploaded directly are not part of the character limit. So make sure you directly upload them to the network, and not simply link them from another. Characters are valuable within the posts.

Video’s on YouTube have to be linked, so use your favorite shortener to add those. At this time, I am not sure if you are able to upload videos directly to Twitter because these sites are always updating and it may have changed.

If you have a question about Twitter please ask me in the comment section of this post and I will be happy to help you.

Make Money Online For Free

make money onlineEveryone wants to make money online right?

Well no… but you do

First, thank you for coming to my site.

There are so many options out there and you chose this one.

Step one to Make Money Online for Free

Find a good community.

There is almost no chance that anyone will make it doing anything new without support and help.

Even the greats like Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie, all had help from some group of people.

Without the help there is very little chance of succeeding or learning anything new. The best place I have found online to achieve this is Wealthy Affiliate.

Everyone there is super helpful and the co-owners even get in on the action, answer questions, and create new content.

Step Two to Make Money Online for Free

We need a website, and I know what you are thinking.make money online 2

“Jaron, that is going to cost money”, and yes normally it would but we can get subdomains for free.

As you can see, this site is a paid site because I had the money to pay for the domain and hosting.

Using a free subdomain is the best way to start your online money machine without spending any money.

I do recommend that once you are making money that you look into buying a domain, if you want to make a new site.

To get a free website visit

Step Three to Make Money Online for Free

We need a niche and keywords.

Think of something you love to talk about and inform people on. It is necessary to be passionate about this topic because you will have to write many posts about that subject.

Once you have a niche in mind we need keywords. Most keyword research sites cost money to join, and they have a lot of extra baggage that we don’t need at the beginning.

To search keywords for free visit, they give us 30 free searches for signing up with their free account. This is more than enough to get us on the move and situate us to make money online.

If you have any questions please ask me in the comment section of this page, and I will be more than happy to answer them.

Facebook : The Leader of Social Networking

Facebook has long been the leader in social network and as of the time I am writing, still is the leader.

I view every social network differently. Google+ is a place I learn new things and meet new people. Twitter is my internet ‘soapbox’, and Facebook is the place I connect with friends and family.

Even though the main purpose of Facebook is to connect with friends and family it is a very powerful tool for bringing people into our websites.

Facebook Pages

These are places for us to set up a ‘profile’ for our online business or company.

This lets us connect with people as our website instead of having them all come to our personal profiles, which are meant for family and friends.

In order for people to see our posts as this page they have to ‘like’ the page. This is done by clicking the ‘like’ button somewhere on the page; it tends to change every so often.

Most of the time people will come to our pages and leave without clicking the button. This will cause them to not see any posts we make as the page in their news feed.

There are strategies to increasing this conversion rate. One is, leveraging the tab options to get people to click your ‘like’ button. We will be getting into this much deeper in the future.

Facebook Ads

Facebook Ad Examples

Another great thing that Facebook offers for our online business is the opportunity to advertise on their site.

This type of advertising is super targeted and tends to yield better results than other advertising platforms.

I have been running a few ‘cheap’ test runs of about $50. These target my niche and aim to get more ‘likes’ to my Page.

Here are my campaign summaries:

If you have any questions please ask me in the comment section.

Also, if you have any experience with Facebook ads please let us know what has worked for you and what has not in the past.

Shortening URLs For Easier Sharing

Shortening a URL is a great way to share your links with social networks and an email list.

There are several sites that offer URL shortening, including:

Lets talk about and first since is a little diffent.

Shortening URLs with GoogleShortening URLs

Google runs, simply go to this site and enter in a long URL that you would like shortened, and click ‘shorten url’.

If you have a Google account you are able to sign and keep track of all the links you have shortened, and return to use them again.

Shortening URLs with bitlyShortening URLs bitly does the same thing but in order to save your URLs and come back to them, you will need to create an account. The difference here is their tracking system.

They show statistics on the links you have shortened, showing you when someone clicked and which short links get clicked the most.

Shortening URLs with Adfly

Now for Adfly, this also shortens links and if you sign in you able to see the links you shortened. The difference are ads, they have a five second window where the people who click your link spend on an ad or website.

They then have the option to skip into the desired content, after those five seconds.Shortening URLs adfly We are able to sign up as a publisher or an advertiser to take full advantage of the adfly system.

Adfly Publisher

With the publisher option, we create the shortened URLs and every time someone clicks those links we make a small commission. Adfly also has a referral program that will bring in some extra income as well.

Adfly Advertiser

Under the advertiser option, we are able to put our site into they Adfly system to be shown for at least five seconds to the viewers of the shortened URLs. This costs about one US dollar for every thousand views via Adfly.

There is a minimum purchase of $5, so this will get you 5,000 visitors. It is a very effective way of bringing people to your site but the visits and views are extremely low quality.

Some people will sign up for the services you are offering when you see it in adfly but because these are not targeted to anyone specific there is a lot of ‘junk traffic’.

If you are looking to pay for visits to your site, use Facebook ads or Google’s Adwords program. This will give you a much higher conversion rate.

Backlinks and How To Use Them –>

If you have any questions about shortening URLs please ask me in the comment section below, and I will be more than happy to help!

SEO Keyword Tool

When using any SEO keyword tool, first think of three topics that you are able to expand upon within your niche. If your niche is about fly fishing some ideas could be, rods, bait, and technique.

Now that you have some topics think of a search term that someone might use when looking for information within that topic. Such as ‘proper fly fishing technique’ or ‘best fly fishing rods’.

We are going to be using those as our starter phrase in finding more keywords to target in posts.

Best SEO Keyword Tool

My favorite tool for finding keywords and phrases is, they just focus on keywords and phrases which helps keeps the price down. They also give us 30 free searches to get the hang of the program to make sure it is exactly what we are looking for.

I will be using jaaxy as the base for this post. If you have another keyword tool that you have found and prefer to use it, that is fine.

Using an SEO Keyword Tool

Once you setup your free trial at jaaxy you will see a search box like this.

SEO Keyword Tool

Take you keyword or phrase and enter it into the search box and click search. This will bring up a list of relevant keywords based on your entry.

There are a few things to look for when picking a keyword to focus on.

  1. Make sure the wording makes sense.
  2. Make sure there is a decent amount of traffic looking for that keyword (this is kind of subjective but I tend to shoot for a thousand “Estimated Traffic”).
  3. Make sure the ‘QSR’ is 300 or less.

‘QSR’ stands for Quoted Search Results and is the number of competing web pages for that specific keyword or phrase. Some have thousands and others have under 100.

SEO Keyword Tool 2

Click for enlarged view

When you find a term that you would like to use, click the ‘QSR’ to make sure it is under the 300 cap. The reason for this is to help our chances of ranking on the first page in Google. The higher we rank the more of a chance there is to be seen.

Spam, What Is It?

Spam on the internet is when someone or some computer sends unsolicited advertisements or messages in bulk. This may be through email or social networks.

History of spam

The first spam message was sent back in 1978, by a man named Gary Thuerk. He wrote a mass email to 393 people in bulk, about a new program.

Needless to say many people reacted negatively towards this. At the time the word spam was not even used to reference this kind of activity.

The first chain letter was released in 1988 directing people on how to ‘make money fast’, very few people made fast money.

The first major commercialized spam took place in the beginning of March 1994 by a husband and wife team of lawyers. Their bulk advertisements were focused on immigration laws and quickly became coined as ‘green card spam’.

What counts as spam?

What counts as spam can be pretty subjective but we will make some good rules of thumb to make sure you are not caught in the act so spamming.

  • Don’t post the same message, article, or affiliate program more than once a week on a single network.
  • Don’t make several posts to affiliate offers or websites within a short amount of time on a social network.
  • Don’t message someone over and over to get their attention.
  • Don’t mass email. To be safe this is anything over 50 and most of the time keep the multi-person emails under 10 people at a time.

Questions about spam?

If you are unsure if an action you are about to take will be considered spamming a social network or email, hold off and ask someone.

You are more then welcome to ask me here, by email, or leaving a comment in the section of this page.

If you have any good advice about spam and how to avoid committing it please let us know as well in the comment section.
