Shortening URLs For Easier Sharing

Shortening a URL is a great way to share your links with social networks and an email list.

There are several sites that offer URL shortening, including:

Lets talk about goo.gl and bitly.com first since adf.ly is a little diffent.

Shortening URLs with GoogleShortening URLs

Google runs goo.gl, simply go to this site and enter in a long URL that you would like shortened, and click ‘shorten url’.

If you have a Google account you are able to sign and keep track of all the links you have shortened, and return to use them again.

Shortening URLs with bitlyShortening URLs bitly

Bitly.com does the same thing but in order to save your URLs and come back to them, you will need to create an account. The difference here is their tracking system.

They show statistics on the links you have shortened, showing you when someone clicked and which short links get clicked the most.

Shortening URLs with Adfly

Now for Adfly, this also shortens links and if you sign in you able to see the links you shortened. The difference are ads, they have a five second window where the people who click your link spend on an ad or website.

They then have the option to skip into the desired content, after those five seconds.Shortening URLs adfly We are able to sign up as a publisher or an advertiser to take full advantage of the adfly system.

Adfly Publisher

With the publisher option, we create the shortened URLs and every time someone clicks those links we make a small commission. Adfly also has a referral program that will bring in some extra income as well.

Adfly Advertiser

Under the advertiser option, we are able to put our site into they Adfly system to be shown for at least five seconds to the viewers of the shortened URLs. This costs about one US dollar for every thousand views via Adfly.

There is a minimum purchase of $5, so this will get you 5,000 visitors. It is a very effective way of bringing people to your site but the visits and views are extremely low quality.

Some people will sign up for the services you are offering when you see it in adfly but because these are not targeted to anyone specific there is a lot of ‘junk traffic’.

If you are looking to pay for visits to your site, use Facebook ads or Google’s Adwords program. This will give you a much higher conversion rate.

SEO Keyword Tool

When using any SEO keyword tool, first think of three topics that you are able to expand upon within your niche. If your niche is about fly fishing some ideas could be, rods, bait, and technique.

Now that you have some topics think of a search term that someone might use when looking for information within that topic. Such as ‘proper fly fishing technique’ or ‘best fly fishing rods’.

We are going to be using those as our starter phrase in finding more keywords to target in posts.

Best SEO Keyword Tool

My favorite tool for finding keywords and phrases is Jaaxy.com, they just focus on keywords and phrases which helps keeps the price down. They also give us 30 free searches to get the hang of the program to make sure it is exactly what we are looking for.

I will be using jaaxy as the base for this post. If you have another keyword tool that you have found and prefer to use it, that is fine.

Using an SEO Keyword Tool

Once you setup your free trial at jaaxy you will see a search box like this.

SEO Keyword Tool

Take you keyword or phrase and enter it into the search box and click search. This will bring up a list of relevant keywords based on your entry.

There are a few things to look for when picking a keyword to focus on.

  1. Make sure the wording makes sense.
  2. Make sure there is a decent amount of traffic looking for that keyword (this is kind of subjective but I tend to shoot for a thousand “Estimated Traffic”).
  3. Make sure the ‘QSR’ is 300 or less.

‘QSR’ stands for Quoted Search Results and is the number of competing web pages for that specific keyword or phrase. Some have thousands and others have under 100.

SEO Keyword Tool 2

Click for enlarged view

When you find a term that you would like to use, click the ‘QSR’ to make sure it is under the 300 cap. The reason for this is to help our chances of ranking on the first page in Google. The higher we rank the more of a chance there is to be seen.

Spam, What Is It?

Spam on the internet is when someone or some computer sends unsolicited advertisements or messages in bulk. This may be through email or social networks.

History of spam

The first spam message was sent back in 1978, by a man named Gary Thuerk. He wrote a mass email to 393 people in bulk, about a new program.

Needless to say many people reacted negatively towards this. At the time the word spam was not even used to reference this kind of activity.

The first chain letter was released in 1988 directing people on how to ‘make money fast’, very few people made fast money.

The first major commercialized spam took place in the beginning of March 1994 by a husband and wife team of lawyers. Their bulk advertisements were focused on immigration laws and quickly became coined as ‘green card spam’.

What counts as spam?

What counts as spam can be pretty subjective but we will make some good rules of thumb to make sure you are not caught in the act so spamming.

  • Don’t post the same message, article, or affiliate program more than once a week on a single network.
  • Don’t make several posts to affiliate offers or websites within a short amount of time on a social network.
  • Don’t message someone over and over to get their attention.
  • Don’t mass email. To be safe this is anything over 50 and most of the time keep the multi-person emails under 10 people at a time.

Questions about spam?

If you are unsure if an action you are about to take will be considered spamming a social network or email, hold off and ask someone.

You are more then welcome to ask me here, by email, or leaving a comment in the section of this page.

If you have any good advice about spam and how to avoid committing it please let us know as well in the comment section.

Proven Ways to Achieve Better Blog Maintenance – Step 10

Maintenance of your website is very important, which is why I have made it number ten on the list of building a website.

Basic Website Maintenance

One thing we can do is cleaning up unused files on the server using the FTP program we downloaded during our installation of WordPress Plugins.

Be careful with this, we don’t want to delete any files needed for our site to run. Just to be safe, make sure you backup your blog before deleting or editing any files on the server.

You can do this from within WordPress. Go to the sidebar located on the dashboard, find ‘tools’, and click ‘export’.

We are then taken to the screen to backup your WordPress blog. Select ‘all content’ and then export the file.

This will download a single file containing all of your blogs, pages, and images.

If something was to happen to your site, you can upload this file to WordPress again and everything will go back to the way it was right before the making of the backup file.

maintenance 1WordPress Maintenance

This is important as well, every so often WordPress has an update to make it better and more secure for the users. Always backup your site before updating WordPress

This even goes for all your plugins, they need to be updated sometimes as well so make sure you backup your blog before doing so.

There has been reports of people updating a plugin and then everything seems to stop working. Don’t get caught without a site backup, we don’t want to have to redo all our hard work.

Appearance Maintenance

Keep your websites appearance fresh and clean. If things start to get cluttered go through and find ways to freshen it up.

Add drop down menus, take off some sidebar widgets and remove some affiliate images.

Content is the most important aspect of your site and you will find that even ugly sites will rank.

But a site that has good content and a great look will often get more reshares from the visitors. This also helps the user feel comfortable, so don’t clutter your site.

Please leave me a comment if you have any questions, as always I am more than happy to help!

Google Plus : Google’s Social Network

Google Plus is relatively new compared to Facebook or Twitter, but that does not mean that it will not benefit our site’s reach.

Google Plus is actually the second largest social network with registered users, second only to Facebook.

Google Plus Terms

Not every social network uses the same terminology when referring to certain parts of their site. When adding people in Google Plus we us circles. We are allowed to have as many circles as we wish and we may have a person in more than one circle.

The section of Google Plus that has all the posts from the people we have circled is called the feed. This section becomes more and more active as we circle more people and organizations.

There are hashtags. These allow us to categorize our posts for anyone to search for them. To use this feature all we have to do is think of a category that our post fits within and add a ‘#’ to the beginning of the word. It will look something like #WealthyAffiliate or #caturday.

(When you get on Google Plus, and if you love cats, look up the caturday hashtag; it is glorious.)

Sections of Google Plus

Communities

Google Plus Communities

Example of a community.

This is a really awesome part of Google Plus.

A community is a group where anyone in that group can post stories, blogs, photos, and videos of whatever that community is about.

If we join a community about dogs there will be thousands of people in that community that love dogs just as much, if not more, than we do.

These really help get the word out about your site. Find a community that fits your niche, or is your niche, and start making some great new contacts.

Photos

There is an entire section for your photos. Anytime you upload one, it will be stored with the rest in one easy to reach place.

What’s hot

This is the top posts on Google Plus at this time and changes from day to day. It is a great way to find people to add to your circles who enjoy the same things as you. Or just have some awesome posts that you would like to know more about.

If you have a question on how to do something in Google Plus please let me know. I love Google Plus and spend a lot of time there, so comment your questions and I will answer it as soon as possible.

What is SEO and Why You Should Care

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization

What is SEO

Somethings to Think about for SEO

  • Keywords – These are the phrases or words that you would like your website to show up for in Google.
  • Competitiveness – The more competitive a keyword or keyphrase tends to be, will make it harder or easier for your site to get close to the top of the list.
  • Audience – Who is coming to your site, what do they search for, and how do they search. These are important, wording your keyphrases to how your audience submits searches will increase your chances of reaching the top.
  • Descriptions – This is normally what Google will add under the URL of your site. Think about what best describes your business or website. Add your main keyword or phrase to the description for a little extra boost.

Types of SEO

White HatWhite Hat SEO

This is comprised of techniques that comply with Google’s terms of service.

This kind of SEO does take longer to see results, but is the only way you should be doing your optimization.

Google is always updating and refining their search, so make sure you are on their good side.

Black Hat

This is made up of tricks and scams to try and ‘beat’ Google.

Never go this route.

If someone offers your site to be on page one, first position in Google in under a month, they are almost always using a black hat technique.

Google will catch up with these tricks and will harshly penalize your website. Often with no chance of a positive return.

How Search Works

I will continue to add posts on SEO and good techniques that will help boost your site’s position in Google. So check back for any updates to this post or any new posts about various SEO topics.

If you have any questions or concerns about SEO for you online business please let me know in the comments.

How To Use Tags So Readers Can Discover Your Content – Step 9

Understanding TagsThe fourth box from the top, on the right-hand side of creating a new post, or editing an existing one, is the ‘Tags’ box.

A tag is defined as “a label attached to someone or something for the purpose of identification or to give other information.” – Google

For most of history, the word tag was not used nearly as much as it is now. Around 1988, it started taking off and has continued to increase in usage.

Understanding Tag: Organizing

Just like categories, tags are important for organizing our posts, as well as letting search engines know what our post is about.

Of course, the title and content of our posts are also factors for search engines to know what we are writing about.

Tags allow us to add variations and other ways to say our keywords, that we may not want to put within the ‘meat’ of our content.

Synonyms are great to use as tags since they mean the same thing as our content and title.

This lets search engines, and WordPress, know that there is another term that fits our latest creation.

Understanding Tags Vs. Categories

As I said above, tags are similar to categories but there are differences.

Understanding Tags Tag Cloud

Tag Clouds are a great way to visually display our most used tags.

Tags allow us to describe our content with more detail than we have with categories.

Let’s say you have a post about making a cake.

You might put it under the category of “Baking”, and have tags like vanilla, recipe, and almonds.

You do not have to use tags but will only benefit the site if you do. Just don’t go overboard with it, keep the number of tags under 10 and make them count.

You would not want to be searching google and see articles that are not relevant to a topic. Don’t add a tag like brownies to a post about cakes.

Also, you don’t have to worry about capital letters when adding tags, they are not case-sensitive. ‘Cake’ and ‘cake’ are taken as the same word when used as a tag.

Please feel free to ask me any question about tags in the comment section of this post and I will be more than happy to help you out!
